8th, 2008 - Indian Hollow
Well, we certainly broke our rainy-weather jinx this time out, my friends. We got 92 degrees, sunny and mucho humid in exchange, but I guess in the grand scheme of things that beats cold and rainy. Indian Hollow was in good shape and with 20+ mph winds (which certainly did help keep us more comfortable) it played a few strokes tougher than normal.
We had a first-time winner yesterday, as Gordie Willbond shot his best round in a number of years, a 49+46=95, which gave him a Net 65 and first place points. It goes without saying that a 65 does not go unpunished, so we will take care of him in our own way, but we DO need to take time to congratulate him for his round before we wipe that smile off his face! Second place went to the reigning Cheeseboard holder, Andy Liedel, who fired an impressive 38+40=78 and a Net 67. The Drewmeister has these 70’s in him at least a couple of times a year, and we have to expect it when it happens. We will, of course, knock a little off that 11 handicap of his, as well.
Third place points went to the Senior Citizen of the group, as Bob Markel shot a nice 48+48=96 and a Net 69. Although we might not see him again for awhile, he will also be greeted upon his return by one of the Commissioner’s handicap adjustments! In the meantime, we must give him his props, along with our two leaders. Low Gross honors went, of course, to the Drewmeister, who outdistanced the second-place Commissioner’s 90 by a mile. Jeff Liedel and Matt Willbond chipped in with a pair of 92’s to take third.
The season-long race for the coveted Cheeseboard also got a little tighter. Mark “The Kid” Loan held onto his share of first place – and, might add, put a trio of 300+ yard drives out there yesterday to wow his playing partners. Taking advantage of Coop’s absence, the wily Drewmeister moved into second place, thanks to his 18-point take yesterday. Coop slipped to third and former Cheeseboard winner Capt. Ken Smith slid into fourth. What looked like a two horse race just a month ago has all of a sudden become a whole lot more interesting!!
Our July event finds us returning to Hinckley Hills for our annual 4-Man Scramble event. This is always a good time for all who participate, and a chance for some of us near the bottom of the standings to move up a bit (which we definitely need). Stay tuned to see how your favorite tour amateur fares.
